What is it?
Sinus augmentation, also called ‘a sinus lift’ is a surgical procedure performed on the upper jaw sinus cavity involving bone grafting. It is used to enable dental restoration in patients who do not have enough natural bone to successfully provide a foundation for dental implants. The bone grafting process ensures you achieve the adequate bone height needed for dental restoration by dental implants.
The procedure
A qualified surgeon will make an incision on the gum tissue where your back teeth once were. This will allow the surgeon to lift the tissue, exposing the bone. There a small window will be opened in the bone. The membrane that lines the sinus, effectively separating your sinus from your jaw is gently pushed up and away from your jaw.
Afterwards, bone material is then packed into the space vacated by your sinus. Once the bone is in place the tissue is stitched back together again with your implants being placed four to nine months later. This allows the bone-graft material to merge with your natural bone. The duration of this process will vary with the amount of bone needed.
