Sedation Dentistry for Anxiety Management

At Gentle Dental Care, we provide professional sedation services to ensure your dental visit is comfortable, calm, and completely pain-free.

Unlike standard clinics, we offer multiple levels of sedation to cater to high-anxiety patients and those undergoing complex procedures. Our team supports patients with past dental trauma or natural phobias by providing a safe, regulated environment. With 7 clinics across Sydney, including 7-day availability in Liverpool, Miranda, and Wetherill Park, anxiety-free dentistry is more accessible than ever.

Methods of Sedation

We offer three levels of sedation tailored to the complexity of the treatment and the patient’s specific needs.

Group 956

Nitrous Oxide (Happy Gas)

  • Indications: Mild anxiety, needle phobia, or paediatric patients.
  • Administration: Inhaled via a nasal mask throughout the duration of the treatment.
  • Recovery: The effects dissipate within minutes of the mask being removed. Patients are clinically cleared to drive themselves home immediately.
Group 956 (1)

Oral Sedation

  • Indications: Moderate anxiety and longer restorative treatment sessions.
  • Administration: A prescribed sedative tablet taken approximately one hour before the appointment.
  • Recovery: Induces a deep sense of relaxation and drowsiness. Patients must have a companion drive them home as coordination remains impaired for several hours.
Group 956 (2)

IV Sedation (Sleep Dentistry)

  • Indications: Severe dental phobia, sensitive gag reflex, or invasive Oral Surgery.
  • Administration: Administered intravenously by a qualified anaesthetist.
  • Recovery: Often referred to as “Twilight Sleep,” patients remain conscious but typically have no memory of the procedure. Requires a 24-hour recovery period and a designated driver.

The Sedation Process: What to Expect

To ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the treatment, we follow a structured clinical process for all sedation cases:

Step 1

Initial Consultation

We review your medical history, level of anxiety, and treatment requirements to determine the most suitable sedation method.

Step 2

Pre-Appointment Instructions

For IV sedation, you will receive specific fasting guidelines and must arrange a responsible adult for your transport home.

Step 3

The Procedure

For advanced sedation, our anaesthetist monitors your vital signs, including heart rate and oxygen levels, using hospital-grade equipment throughout the session.

Step 4

Clinical Monitoring

You will remain in our recovery area until the immediate effects of the sedative have subsided. We provide a full post-operative care plan before discharge.

Post-Sedation Care: The Aftercare Guide

To ensure a safe and smooth recovery following your appointment, please follow these guidelines for the first 24 hours.

The “Dos”

Do have a responsible adult stay with you until the sedative has fully worn off.

Do rest quietly at home for the remainder of the day.

Do stay hydrated with water and eat light, soft meals as directed by your dentist.

The “Don’ts”

Don’t drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery for 24 hours (excluding Happy Gas).

Don’t consume alcohol or make important legal decisions for at least 24 hours.

Don’t engage in strenuous physical activity or exercise until the following day.

Who is a Candidate for Sleep Dentistry?

A professional sedation treatment is a clinical solution for several patient profiles:

Check

Dental Phobia: Patients with extreme nervousness or past trauma.

Check

Strong Gag Reflex: For those who physically struggle with traditional dental tools.

Check

Complex Procedures: Ideal for Wisdom Teeth Removal or multiple Dental Implants in one session.

Check

Low Pain Threshold: Patients who find local anaesthetics alone are not enough.

Clinical Compliance and Safety Protocols

Your safety is managed through strict clinical protocols. All sedation procedures at Gentle Dental Care comply with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) guidelines.

For all IV sedation cases, we work with qualified sedationists and anaesthetists to provide constant physiological monitoring. Our 7 Sydney clinics are equipped with the latest monitoring technology to ensure a safe, controlled environment for every patient.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you still have questions, feel free to call one of our 7 clinics and speak with a team member.

Can I drive home after my appointment?
If you receive Happy Gas, you may drive yourself home. If you receive Oral or IV sedation, you must have a responsible adult drive you home and remain with you for several hours, as your coordination and judgment will be affected.
Is sleep dentistry safe for children?

Yes. Happy Gas is a safe, standard option for paediatric dental care. For deeper sedation, our clinicians will perform a full medical assessment to ensure your child meets the health requirements for the procedure.

Does insurance cover the cost of sedation?
Many private health insurance providers offer rebates for sedation under specific item codes. We also offer flexible payment plans through Zip to help cover treatment costs.
How will I feel after IV sedation?
Patients generally feel drowsy or lethargic for the remainder of the day. It is common to have no memory of the dental procedure. We recommend a full 24 hours of rest before returning to work or operating machinery.
What are the fasting requirements?
For Happy Gas and Oral Sedation, fasting is generally not required. For IV sedation, you must fast (no food or liquids) for at least 6 hours prior to your appointment. Detailed instructions are provided during your initial consultation.
I am terrified of the dentist. How can you help?

We specialise in treating patients with dental phobias, and we work at a pace that makes you feel in control and completely at ease. Along with our sedation options, you can read our clinical guide on managing dental fear and anxiety for more support.
